WATER BLOCKWATER BLOCK is an urban design and tech startup that works to reduce flooding in neighborhood blocks and elevate community voice in development projects.
WATER BLOCK acknowledges the environmental, economic and racial inequities in the built environment among communities of color and other minority groups. These disparities are heightened in design and environmental leadership, where these groups are disproportionately impacted, yet, lack the resources, access and data-driven tools to initiate policy and apply funding towards their own community needs.
Recognition of these injustices led to the creation of WATER BLOCK, which works to accentuate community assets and growth opportunities, while highlighting the value of art and culture in development.
Atianna Cordova is a native of New Orleans, and an urban designer, researcher and educator exploring the role of art and culture in disaster recovery and community development. She is recognized as LSU School of Architecture’s first McNair Research Scholar, a 2016 UC Berkeley Undergraduate Prize for Architectural Design Excellence Travel Fellow, a 2017 Salzburg Global Fellow, a 2018 4pt0 Schools Fellow, the co-winner of Propeller’s 2018 Water Challenge Pitch Competition and a 2019 Ideas City Fellow for her commitment to building equity in design and environmental practice for youth and communities of color. Atianna received her M.Sc in Disaster Resilience Leadership from Tulane University, Bachelor of Architecture from LSU, and Certificate in Community Development Finance from the University of New Orleans.
